The Curlgar And The Other Sports Hotties Part 2

This is Part 2 of my blog about The Curlgar and the other sports hotties. Read Part 1 here.
As a sports fan, I believe that not all people watch sports because of the competitiveness in it. Others watch it for hormonal/attraction reasons. That is the reason why you see fangirls from any school shrieking at the sight of Chris Tiu during basketball games. New York Yankees have a field day on bars because they attract the chicks (HIMYM reference and A-Rod and Jeter were known to be playboys). Heck, Tiger Woods hooked up with a lot of girls. On the other side of the fence, we – red-blooded males – also watch and get attracted with female hotties in sports. We do not care if they end up losing most of the time (Anna Kournikova is the classic example for this). We just love to have an eye candy when watching sports. Testosterone definitely influences sports.

To be honest, most female beauties in sports pale in comparison with the supermodels and the actresses. But since the male population predominantly watches sports, these female athletes sometimes appear ten times overrated than they should be. It does not matter though – males get attracted to ladies in sports even if it is usually a male thing because we love seeing similarities in females. What would you prefer? A girlfriend that can play tennis with you or a girlfriend who can’t? That is a probable reason or it could be because we seldom see pretty faces in sports that one cute sporty lady easily gets our attention (just like the students in our high school scrambling when they see girls playing soccer).

With this, I thought of writing about the hottest women in sports today. Who are the top eye candies that red-blooded males like me want to see in front of our TV sets? I will list down the top ten in the next paragraphs but there are some criteria that need to be followed:

1)    No female wrestlers. Scripted wrestling is not a sport anyway. It is just pure entertainment. Furthermore, they really intend to put wildly attractive female wrestlers in there for bikini contests in order to please the predominantly male audience.
2)    There is a maximum of three athletes per sport. This is necessary or else I would have just written about the top ten female tennis hotties. OK, let’s give a +1 for tennis since it has been consistently producing the prettiest female athletes ever.
3)    Only active sports personalities can be in this list. I do not want to delve in past generations. The sports figures in this ranking should also be in sports right now (and not doing some office job because she retired from sports).
4)    This is not based solely on looks. Relevance, popularity, success take up 1% of the scoring, 99% is on the looks (Haha! Just kidding!). By the way, revolutionizing the sport is a huge factor as well.
5)    Cheerleading is not a sport.

After recalling all the sports hotties, I had a startling revelation: it was difficult to get it to ten. There are so few sports hot chicks that I really had a hard time recalling ten of them (some of them are not even that attractive). I even thought of putting UAAP women’s volleyball athletes in this list (but it would be unfair to compare them on a global list… although in my opinion, some of them could top the last two girls in this list).

Here is the list:

10. Lauren Jackson (Women’s Basketball – WNBA). Lauren is an example of a ‘sports hottie’ that is not actually a hottie if you compare her to other celebrities. She is way too tall (as she plays the center position). She is not the sexy slim type either. Her Aussie looks, however, makes her stand out as compared to other WNBA players (uhmmm… there are very few attractive WNBA players though). Her sexy poses in Sports Illustrated also helped her cause in this list.

9. Amanda Beard (Swimmer). To be honest, I have not seen her swim but Amanda has been sexy and popular enough to be in here. But still, she does not hold a candle against celebrity chicks of her own age.
8. Maria Kirilenko (Tennis Player). When I was thinking of putting a +1 for tennis stars, I had Maria in my mind. Should I make her the exception? I looked at her image again and saw her cute face. After 0.02 second, I had my answer. She is in here. Why not higher? She has the youthful and cute charm that can match celebrities, BUT she does not place well. According to her Wikipedia page, her career-high was just #18. She needs to be more relevant to the game before I place her higher.
7. Sue Bird (Women’s Basketball – WNBA). #7 and #6 are debatable subjects for me. But I finally decided to put Sue before #6 chick in this list. Why? #6 girl has a sexier body, therefore she just won the argument by a hair. But, looks-wise, both of them are pretty. Sue is a point guard so she is in the position where most WNBA hotties are (and by that, I mean two of them). This petite girl is probably the best pure point guard in their league. She is also known to be good in clutch and has been a champion. Sue epitomizes the cute girl that you know who plays basketball. She has simple but pretty looks and she does not have the build of a normal women’s basketball player.
6. Elena Dementieva (Tennis). Every time I tune into Star Sports and find a tennis game, I often see this green clad chick smashing tennis balls in precise and strategic spots in the court. With her signature green shirt, Elena is very recognizable. She has a nice slim body which could be a hindrance for her. I think she symbolizes the hot sports chick we root for even if we know that she can be dominated and defeated in the end. Sports is just not made for the conventional sexy girls (by conventional sexy, I mean the slim ones). But with Elena’s perseverance, she has placed quite well (#7). Unfortunately, there are many times that I have seen her get dominated by power players.
5. Cheryl Bernard (Curling). The Curlgar makes the top five on my list because of several reasons: 1) she is one of the reasons why curling is relevant; 2) she also achieved well in her sport as she carried her team in the Olympic gold medal match (unfortunately, she was also the cause of their defeat); and 3) she maybe old (44 years old) but she can match with the other celebrity cougars because of her awesome body. How the hell did she maintain that body on that not-so-athletic sport? Beats me. Her looks, despite of some signs of aging, are still above average. Cheryl is very much covered with her curling attire yet you can observe that she has a sexy body. When you watch her play, you can also feel the aura – you have Canadians wildly cheering when it is her turn as she glides elegantly on the sheet of ice. Lastly, she has a cool nickname (thanks to Bill Simmons). Curlgar is so unique and is easy to recognize. It is current because the term “cougar” is much used these days.
4. Becky Hammon (Women’s Basketball – WNBA). Cheryl Bernard almost unseated my long-time WNBA crush. But because Becky Hammon has been in my radar for some years, I think she should place better. Besides, she has been one of the most relevant figures in WNBA. She has always been in MVP talks because she has a knack of bailing out her team during huge deficits. She maybe small for her position but Becky has always made a point of being a game changer because of her hard work and wits. Becky is WNBA’s Steve Nash – not physically gifted but still knows how to be transcendent. NBA has consistently put Becky in the Haier Shooting Stars during the All-Star Weekend every year because she has the commercial appeal and the competitiveness that could probably entice some NBA fans to get curious of the WNBA.

3. Maria Sharapova (Tennis). But of course! Maria Sharapova needs to be in this list. She is the most successful tennis hottie of the decade. However, Maria’s relevance has started to fade in the recent years. That is why #2 girl is…
2. Ana Ivanovic (Tennis). The prettiest tennis player alive. She has that simple and natural beauty that red-blooded males love. Forget about her mediocre ranking in the sport. Ana’s beauty is just hard to ignore. Ana is just 22 years old and still has some upside. She already won a grand slam (something that Dementieva and Kirilenko have yet to achieve) so you cannot fully doubt her success. And, Ana has increased her relevance by posing in Sports Illustrated Bikini Edition 2010. And, she sizzled there better than her other tennis counterparts.
1. Danica Patrick (Racing). Yup, a chick in a manly sport beats them all. Danica takes the top spot because she is the most well-rounded of them. Ana is not that relevant to her sport achievement-wise. Maria Sharapova may have accomplished a lot but she is losing her luster (plus Danica is more beautiful in my opinion). Becky is on a league that does not get any attention. Danica Patrick has it all. She revolutionized racing and made it more relevant. She became the first woman to ever win an Indy car race. And now, she has changed cars as she goes to the NASCAR route. Beauty-wise, there is no doubt that Danica is hot. I can still remember watching the Super Bowl in live streaming when a GoDaddy commercial was shown. Danica Patrick appeared in a black bikini in there and I was speechless for the next two minutes. She maybe excelling in a sport where you cannot barely see her face but Danica Patrick has become such a media figure where you can always see her face in pictures after the race. Heck, she crashed in her first NASCAR race and she was still in the headlines of ESPN. You cannot also play the Sports Illustrated card against her because Danica Patrick also posed in it not only once but twice! I must say she was extremely hot in there.
